Why Fitness Matters and How to Make it Happen

Good morning

This morning, I am sitting at my kitchen table drinking my coffee. I just had a bowl of steal cut oats, with protein powder, flax, blueberries and a small dash of maple syrup. I try to have this breakfast, along with a slice of sourdough bread and peanut butter at least three times a week. At my annual exam, my doctor told me to continue doing what I have been doing, as it appears to keep me healthy. Always good to hear that.

This morning, I dawned my running attire and told myself, 10:00 would be go time. I do not love the humidity level at that time (96%), but with the lingering clouds and precipitation, humidity will be unavoidable. I will need to hydrate with more than coffee!

To steal a line from the best-selling book of all time (the Bible), “In the beginning”, we were No Finish Line Running, a running only focused business. We did (and still do) all things running from coaching to all levels of runners, leading group training and providing expert gait analysis. Around 2017, after some time in the Sandhills Community College Exercise Science program, I decided to broaden our business model and we rebranded as, No Finish Line Fitness. Education helped me to improve immensely as a running coach but also motivated me to want to help people become more fit (or get).

We added multiple certifications, American Council on Exercise (ACE), personal training and group fitness training, TRX suspension training. Combined with RRCA Level II running coaching and Level II Gait Analysis, we have developed a knowledgeable and well-rounded fitness model.

Helping You to Your Best Life

In today’s fast-paced world, maintaining fitness and wellness often takes a backseat to hectic schedules and endless responsibilities. Yet, the importance of staying fit cannot be overstated fitness is not just about looking good; it’s about feeling good, living longer, and enjoying life to its fullest potential. This blog serves as your guide to understanding the principles of fitness and embracing small, impactful steps toward a healthier lifestyle.

What Is Fitness?

Fitness is a holistic concept that encompasses physical, mental, and emotional well-being. It is the ability to perform daily tasks with vigor, maintain optimal health, and have the energy to pursue recreational activities. Fitness is not a one-size-fits-all goal; it is a personalized journey that varies for everyone depending on factors like age, body type, and lifestyle.

The Components of Physical Fitness

To achieve a well-rounded state of fitness, it is essential to focus on the following key components:

  • Cardiovascular Endurance: The ability of your heart and lungs to deliver oxygen to your muscles during prolonged physical activity. Activities like jogging, cycling, and swimming improve this component.
  • Muscular Strength: The capacity of your muscles to exert force. Strength training exercises, such as weightlifting, increase muscular strength.
  • Flexibility: The range of motion in your joints. Stretching and yoga can help improve flexibility and prevent injuries.
  • Body Composition: The ratio of fat to lean muscle in your body. Achieving a healthy body composition often involves a combination of exercise and proper nutrition.

Why Fitness Matters

A commitment to fitness offers numerous physical, mental, and emotional benefits:

  • Improved Physical Health: Regular exercise reduces the risk of chronic illnesses like heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. It also strengthens muscles, bones, and joints.
  • Mental Clarity: Physical activity stimulates the release of endorphins and serotonin, chemicals in the brain that boost mood and reduce stress.
  • Enhanced Sleep: Engaging in regular exercise promotes deeper and more restorative sleep.
  • Increased Longevity: Studies have shown that individuals who stay physically active tend to live longer and healthier lives.

How to Get Started

Embarking on a fitness journey can be daunting, but the key is to start small and remain consistent. Here are steps to get you moving in the right direction:

1. Set Clear Goals

Define what fitness means to you. Is it losing weight, gaining muscle, running a marathon, or simply staying active? Establish realistic, measurable, and time-bound goals.

2. Choose Activities You Love

Fitness should be enjoyable, not a chore. I am often asked what fitness activity is the best one? While I like running, others prefer activities such as biking, swimming or other activities. I recommend the activity they will stick with. However, I emphasize that everyone should be doing at least 2 days a week of resistance training.

3. Develop a Routine

Consistency is the cornerstone of fitness. Set aside specific days and times for exercise and treat them as non-negotiable appointments with yourself.

5. Track Progress

Monitor your improvements to stay motivated. Keep a journal, use fitness apps, or simply take note of how your energy levels and mood improve over time.

6. Invest in Your Fitness

We smartly put money into retirement plans and yet we do not often invest our time or money into our future health and functional capability. Do both and if that means you stay on point by investing a few dollars in a trainer, do it.

Staying Motivated

The fitness journey is not without its challenges. Here are some tips for maintaining motivation:

  • Find a Workout Buddy: Exercising with a friend can make the experience more enjoyable and hold you accountable.
  • Celebrate Small Wins: Recognize and reward your progress, no matter how small it may seem.
  • Switch It Up: Avoid monotony by trying new workouts or exploring different activities.
  • Focus on How You Feel: Pay attention to the positive changes in your physical and mental well-being rather than just numbers on a scale.

Overcoming Common Barriers

Excuses often stand in the way of fitness goals. Here’s how to overcome some common obstacles:

Lack of Time

Integrate short, high-intensity workouts into your routine, or engage in activities like walking or cycling to work.

Low Motivation

Remind yourself of the reasons you started and visualize your desired outcome.

Rest days are as important as active days in your fitness journey. They allow your body to repair and strengthen itself while reducing the risk of injury. Incorporate activities such as yoga, stretching, and meditation to complement your recovery days.

Fitness as a Way of Life

Ultimately, fitness is not a destination but a lifelong journey. It’s about making sustainable habits that align with your goals and values. By prioritizing both physical activity and mental well-being, you pave the way for a healthier, happier, and more fulfilling life.

Your fitness journey begins today. With a clear vision, a structured plan, and a dose of perseverance, you can achieve the best version of yourself. Remember, fitness is a personal voyage, and every step you take brings you closer to a healthier, more vibrant life. Stay consistent, stay positive, and enjoy the transformative power of fitness.

Now I am off to put my actions to my words. Not a beautiful morning for a run, but today is the best day to run! Have a great weekend and thanks for stopping in.

God Bless,

Mike
